The Seven Most Important Questions to ask Before Hiring an Attorney

    1. How many years of active experience do you have in this particular state? In this particular area of law? For example, in divorce law?

    1. Are you specialized in this field? Do you have a board specialization, accreditation, or a certificate? 

    2. What is your hourly rate? How frequently do you send your invoices? Weekly, biweekly, monthly? And what is the amount of the retainer due? Do you keep the retainer and charge invoices and then return the retainer after the case is finished? Or do you use the retainer amount to replenish the invoices? Do you need to replenish the retainer if the invoices are going low and how low do invoices need to go in order to replenish the retainer?



    1. What's your turnaround time when you give a phone call? What's your turnaround time to return a phone call or an email?

    1. Who is going to be my person to talk to? Are you going to be the lawyer who is going to respond to my phone calls, emails, and also going to hearings and trials? Or will an associate be speaking with me? 

    2. What is the action plan in your particular case? What is your strategy? How would you deal with my case in this particular situation?
    3.  Are you a settlement-oriented attorney or are you more a litigation attorney, or both? Do you go for trial and still try and settle the case? Or do you actually settle cases most of the time? Do you have a mediation certificate or any experience in Mediation Law?
