Taking Care During Divorce

There are a lot of legal and financial things to keep in mind during a divorce. But don’t forget that a divorce can also be an emotional and psychological process. A divorce is generally a big change in your life.

Though it can seem like one more thing to add to an already large list, remembering to take care of yourself is important. Here are some things that may help you through the process:

  • Therapy– Talking to a therapist is helpful for a lot of people, whether or not they’re going through a divorce. If you don’t already have a therapist, it may be a good time to try one out, even if it’s just for a few sessions. You may be able to find a therapist through your health insurance or an employee assistance program. If that’s not available, your county may have mental health resources available at low or no cost.
  • Support groups– These groups are a way to make new friends and sympathize with a group of people who understand what you’re going through. Your health insurance, employee assistance program, or county resources may provide information.
  • Talking to friends and family– Your friends and family can be great resources for any stressful life change. These are people who care about you and are likely hoping for a way to make this easier on you. Maybe these are people you can talk to about your divorce or, if you need some “non-divorce” space, they can talk to you about other things.
