Digital Divorce

When you are divorcing, there are a lot of assets to divide. The court and law are prepared to help you divide your bank accounts and furniture and to remind you to update your insurance beneficiaries and will once the divorce is complete. But have you considered your digital assets and security?

In addition to updating your insurance, estate plans, and other items, you should also consider the following:

  • New passwords on all your accounts.
  • Deciding who will keep any joint accounts, for example Netflix, or if the accounts will be closed and you will each open a new one.
  • Photos – couples often share a camera roll or have another method of combining photos. After a divorce, you’ll probably want to prevent that sharing from happening. You may also want to ensure that you have copies of any photos that you would like that are your ex’s.
  • Documents – make sure that you have copies of important documents. Couples often share a computer and only one party will keep it. You should make sure you have copies of everything you need if you aren’t the one keeping the computer. You should also make sure you have copies of things that could potentially impact you in the future, like your taxes filed during marriage.

These are just some of the things you may need to update once your divorce is complete or as part of the process.
