People Magazine has reported, and both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have confirmed, that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on September 19, 2016. http://www.people.com/article/angelina-jolie-brad-pitt-divorce-hints-of-trouble
Angelina filed in Los Angeles County, where she resides, in compliance with California law regarding residency requirements. Angelina cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce, the most common grounds for divorce.
The couple has six children, meaning that custody, visitation, and possibly support will be big issues as they work through their divorce.
Angelina has asked for joint legal custody, meaning that she and Brad will make decisions about the children together. Angelina asked for sole physical custody of the children, with visitation for Brad. This means that the kids would live with her primarily. If Angelina and Brad are not able to reach an agreement on custody and visitation themselves, California law requires that they attend mediation prior to the judge making an order. When the judge considers what orders to make for custody and visitation, the judge will consider the best interests of the children. Child support may not be a large issue in this matter, given that both Angelina and Brad are very high earners. To learn more about custody and support, see Child Custody and Child Support.
The couple has been married for two years, so their marriage is considered one of short duration. The approximately 10 years that they were together prior to marriage will not be considered in determining the length of their marriage.
Spousal support and community property could be important issues in this divorce as well, if the parties have not signed a pre-marital agreement. Angelina and Brad are known to have several homes around the world. Depending on when they were purchased and if there is a pre-marital agreement or not, these could be community property subject to division in the divorce.
