You filed for divorce, you divided your assets and debts, you’ve set up custody and visitation schedules for the kids, maybe you’ve even got your judgment in hand.
You’re done with the divorce process, right?
No!
Make sure to check your estate planning during and after a divorce. Under California law, a divorce may cancel the other spouse or domestic partner’s rights under a will or other estate plan or similar documents.
Be sure to make any changes necessary so that your estate planning is what you want it to be. Also check out your life insurance and other insurance policies, any joint credit or other accounts, and anything else where your spouse was a joint holder or the beneficiary to make sure they’re what you’d like them to be as well.
