holiday visitation schedules

The holidays are here and it can be a very stressful time during your separation or divorce if you don’t have a holiday schedule set for spending time with your kids.

Here are some ideas for setting up a holiday schedule:

  • 1) Figure out what holidays are most important to you. Maybe your family celebrates Christmas Eve, but Christmas Day isn’t as important. Is Easter huge in your family? The Fourth of July?
  • 2) Alternate years. If both parents celebrate the same major holidays, one way to ensure each gets time with the kids on those holidays is to alternate years. An easy way to do that is to say Parent A will have the children for the holiday in odd years and Parent B during even years.
  • 3) Alternate major holidays. If the kids spend Thanksgiving with Parent A, have them spend Christmas with Parent B. Then you can switch the next year. This way you and the kids get to spend time together celebrating every year.

Remember, that as hard as this is for you, it will be just as hard for the kids. When both parents focus on making sure the kids are having the best holiday season possible, everyone benefits.
